A Message From Nina

About 20 years ago, an employer told me that I had easy access to my emotions. I recall not knowing exactly how to take that particular comment – was it meant to be a compliment or a criticism? It was mostly an observation, but there was a message in it that was not lost on me.

I knew that being an emotional human caused me to be reactive in many situations. And I also knew down deep that this was a weakness of mine. It was how I ‘gave my power away,’ and I decided I needed to stop doing that. So, I got to work.

I offer this as an entry point to understanding who I am as a person and how getting on top of my game with my nutrition and fitness has impacted not only my physical health but also my mental and emotional health. And how this journey of a lifetime can have a profound impact for you too!

While I am a work in progress like all of us, I will say that I credit my health and wellness regimen for allowing me to handle the various stressors – professional, familial, financial, social and health-related – in my life with some measure of reliability AND less emotionality. On the outside, I might look like a very disciplined person. But in reality, it has just been a series of habits strung together over time to create a whole lifestyle that really supports my goals.

I’ve learned from a close friend that in life there are no big decisions, but many small ones that end up shaping a future. So what does this have to do with nutrition and wellness? I think you could say everything… from choosing your mindset, learning to manage stress, finding comfort in talking about hormones and sexual health, taking on appropriate challenges, putting on your sneakers rather than hitting snooze, understanding how nutrition and supplements can support you as you age, and deciding to ask for help.

My approach is wholistic and I draw upon over 20 years of work in this space as a nutritionist, health coach, personal trainer, and supplement industry specialist. I have worked with all ages from the youth elite athlete to the nonagenarian with congestive heart failure.

I have developed and maintained one of the most extensive networks of integrative health practitioners of anyone in this field, which allows me to know the value of referring people out and the options therein should there be a need. I am a proponent of diet-based interventions as a first-line approach, and well-versed in the targeted nutritional interventions that dietary supplements may offer should they be necessary.

I include specialty diagnostic testing only when appropriate and connect clients with additional therapeutic tools offered by my colleagues if we agree they might be supportive.

I am here for you as a trusted confidant, and it is important to me to understand your journey — everything that has brought you to this point — so that I may structure the most personalized plan for you as we work together to support you in accomplishing your health and life goals. Sometimes this is an iterative process; meaning we agree to try something and then we evaluate together whether it had the benefit we had anticipated. Sometimes root causes are elusive and that is exactly what this process is about…getting to the root cause of the issue.

Sometimes we properly identify the root cause, but we have to work at finding the best possible solution. Each of us is different and has traveled different paths. It is important to honor our respective histories and allow grace in the healing process.

You may have heard this before, but I want to make sure this is something you’ve heard from me before you decide to work with me. This is not easy work. You’ve decided to take control of your health and are ready to be the solution. You’re one to say: ‘hang on, before accept that less than comforting health prognosis, let me see what I can do with my diet and lifestyle first.’ If this is you, I can relate. It’s me, too. It’s how I’ve lived my life and how I plan to continue to do so. And I can promise you, from experience, this work won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.
